SPARC in the Park Movie Night

MOST Inver Grove Heights Middle School and Simley High School students DON'T vape, drink alcohol, or use marijuana.* To encourage more healthy choices and family connections, the Inver Grove Heights Spartan Prevention, Advocacy, and Resource Coalition (IGH SPARC) partnered with Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation to provide pre-entertainment for their Movie in the Park event.

On July 7, IGH Parks and Recreation held a free screening of "The Secret Life of Pets 2.” Before the movie, they brought in an ice cream truck, the musical group The Bazillions, and games for kids. IGH SPARC sponsored inflatable obstacle courses, and kids of all ages played on and raced through the inflatables together while parents and friends cheered them on. 

The event was a great chance for neighbors to get together, whether they were playing together or just chatting before the movie. In 2023 Positive Community Norms surveys, 95% of IGHMS and Simley students reported that they drink alcohol less than monthly. When asked whether they believe that MOST IGHMS and Simley students DON’T drink alcohol in a typical month, only 59% of students*, 63% of parents and guardians**, and 23% of adults in the community*** believed the norm.

IGH SPARC encourages open conversation between peers, between parents and children, and between families to show kids that MOST IGHMS and Simley students choose NOT to use substances and that they can make the same positive choices.
